Abstract

Spatial analysis on the human occupations in Coímbre cave (Asturias, Spain): mobility, territoriality and catchment area

The aim of this paper is to develop an analysis on the territoriality and mobility of hunter-gatherer groups that inhabited in Coímbre in its different occupation periods. With the objective of developing this study a Geographic Information System was used, allowing us to get new information on the dimensions, topographical characteristics and visibility of the catchment area of Coímbre cave. Additionally, we have calculated the cost of the movement in the territory, apart of using Least Cost Paths in order to calculate the distances in kilometers and hours to different outcrops of lithic raw materials and to the areas in which the archaeological record reveals the existence of movements as, for example, the coastal area. Moreover, the creation of a Least Cost Path network allowed us to make an approach to the mobility patterns between Sella and Deva rivers. All the above-mentioned analysis provide very useful information to analyze the human behavior in Coímbre between Magdalenian and Gravettian
