Abstract

This keynote speech was held at the 11th Conference on Hunting and Gathering Societies (CHAGS 11) in Vienna, Austria, in September 2015. It comments on the establishment of the International Society for Hunter-Gatherer Research and the new Journal “Hunter Gatherer Research” and it presents ideas about the future orientation of this interdisciplinary field of study. Drawing on examples from first-hand ethnography with the Batek of Malaysia, with Australian Aborigines and with Hai//om San from southern Africa the contribution outlines a new approach in hunter-gatherer studies that explores the notion of “hunter-gatherer situations”.
