Abstract

This geography diploma thesis was written by Harriet Berkhan within the framework of the CRC 806 “Our Way to Europe: Culture-Environment Interaction and Human Mobility in the Late Quaternary” at the University of Cologne. The thesis looks into the working hypothesis, as to whether the current morphology can yield important evidence for the discussion about the “Out of Africa” dispersal of anatomically modern humans (AMH) and the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment. Inasmuch as there are no large-scale topographic maps for the areas under investigation – the Eastern Desert of Egypt – satellite images and satellite data of different resolution were cartographically processed and analytically compared. This was also carried out in order to evaluate their usability and quality in connection with geomorphological and geoarchaeological problems. This diploma was realized under the aegis of the A1 project “Out of Africa – Late Pleistocene Rock Shelter Stratigraphies and Palaeoenvironments in Northeast Africa” in collaboration with the Z2 project “Data Management and Data Services”.
