Database containing the detailed laboratory results from sedimentological and geochemical analysis obtained from Upper Pleistocene sediment stratigraphies in the Wadi Sabra (Jordan) as published in Bertrams et al. (2012): Multiple environmental change at the time of the Modern Human passage through the Middle East – First results from geoarchaeological investigations on Upper Pleistocene sediments in the Wadi Sabra (Jordan). Mehrskalige geomorphometrische Analyse des Gebel Duwi, Ägyptische Ostwüste (diploma thesis University of Cologne) Spatial

This geography diploma thesis was written by Harriet Berkhan within the framework of the CRC 806 “Our Way to Europe: Culture-Environment Interaction and Human Mobility in the Late Quaternary” at the University of Cologne. The thesis looks into the working hypothesis, as to whether the current morphology can yield important evidence for the discussion about the “Out of Africa” dispersal of anatomically modern humans (AMH) and the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment. Inasmuch as there are no large-scale...

C1_14C_AMS_Database_Iberian Peninsula_MPAL_EUP_GRA_SOL Spatial

Database containing radiocarbon AMS dates for Palaeolithic sites of the Iberian Peninsula. 2012. SOL = Solutrean& GRA = Gravettian& EUP = early Upper Palaeolithic& LMP = late Middle Palaeolithic. The data were calibrated using the CalPal-2007-Hulu calibration data-set (Weninger and Jöris, 2007). The table has been published in Schmidt et al. 2012. Rapid climate change and variability of settlement patterns in Iberia during the Late Pleistocene. Quaternary International 274, 179-204.

Climate change recorded in the sediments of Chew Bahir, southern Ethiopia, during the last 45,000 years Spatial

East African paleoenvironments are highly variable, marked by extreme fluctuations in moisture availability, which has far-reaching implications for the origin, evolution and dispersal of Homo sapiens in and beyond the region. This paper presents results from a pilot core from the Chew Bahir basin in southern Ethiopia that records the climatic history of the past 45 ka, with emphasis on the African Humid Period (AHP, ∼15–5 ka calBP). Geochemical, physical and biological indicators show that Chew Bahir...

Archaeological database containing Iberian sites with Middle and/ or Upper Palaeolithic assemblages Spatial Temporal

All sites of the Iberian Peninsula incorporated into the study (n = 152) published in 2012 (Schmidt et al. 2012). The presence or absence (-) of archaeological complexes (SOL = Solutrean&=& GRA = Gravettian&=& EUP = early Upper Palaeolithic&=& LMP = late Middle Palaeolithic, as defined in the text) is listed for each site. The presence of single (s), multiple (m) or a priori unknown (x) stratigraphical subunits is noted for each complex. The ID number...

Supplementary Material: Holocene climate variability in the Levant from the Dead Sea pollen record Spatial

The Dead Sea, located at the deepest place on continent and between the subtropical Mediterranean zone and the desert, reflects in its water composition and levels, and sedimentary records the hydrological conditions in the southern Levant region. Temporal variations in rainfall and temperatures of the Holocene Levant are reconstructed here from pollen data recovered from a sediment core drilled at the Ein Gedi shore, applying a novel biome model based on Bayesian statistics. Our results suggest that the...

Climate and environmental change in the Balkans over the last 17 ka recorded in sediments from Lake Prespa (Albania/F.Y.R. of Macedonia/Greece) Spatial

This paper presents sedimentological, geochemical, and biological data from Lake Prespa (Albania/Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia/Greece). The 320 cm core sequence (Co1215) covers the last 17 ka calBP and reveals significant change in climate and environmental conditions on a local and regional scale. The sediment record suggests typical stadial conditions from 17.1 to 15.7 ka calBP, documented through low lake productivity, well-mixed conditions, and cold-resistant steppe catchment vegetation. Warming...

Vegetation and climate history of the Lake Prespa region since the Lateglacial doi Spatial

Pollen assemblages of a sediment sequence (Co1215) from Lake Prespa reveal substantial vegetational and environmental changes on a regional scale for the Lateglacial and Holocene. The age-depth model, based on radiocarbon dating and tephrochronology, indicates continuous sedimentation for the last c. 17 000 cal BP. An open landscape with prominent cold-resistant steppe vegetation and isolated tree patches (mainly Pinus) is inferred for the Lateglacial. The pollen data suggest the survival of numerous...
