Black carbon accrual during 2000 years of paddy-rice and non-paddy cropping in the Yangtze River Delta, China. Spatial
Rice straw burning has accompanied paddy management for millennia, introducing black carbon (BC) into soil as the residue of incomplete combustion. This study examined the contribution of BC to soil organic matter and the rate at which it accumulates in paddy soils as a result of prolonged paddy management. Soil depth profiles were sampled along a chronosequence of 0-2000 years of rice-wheat rotation systems and adjacent non-paddy systems (50-700 years) in the Bay of Hangzhou (Zhejiang province, China). The...

Lateglacial to Holocene pedogenesis and formation of colluvial deposits in a loess landscape of Central Europe (Wetterau, Germany) Spatial
Loess areas in Central Europe have been settled since ancient times and are therefore predestined to archive information about both the paleoenvironment with and without human activities. In gentle rolling loess-landscapes distinct short and shallow valleys, so-called dells, are prominent landscape elements that act as sediment traps. The loess-paleosol-colluvium (LPC) sequence of Gambach (Wetterau, Germany) can be regarded as an exceptional sequence for Lateglacial-Holocene pedogenesis and human impact in...

Digital image analysis of outcropping sediments: Comparison to photospectrometric data from Quaternary loess deposits at Şanoviţa (Romania) and Achenheim (France) doi
The possibility to use colour data, as extracted from two selected loess-paleosol sequences, is discussed here. Colour data are a fast and inexpensive method of proxy data generation. We compare the outcome from analysing outcrop images taken by digital cameras in the field and spectral colour data as determined under controlled laboratory conditions. By nature, differences can be expected due to variations in illumination, moisture, and sample preparation. Outcrop inclination may be an issue for...

Formation and Geochronology of Last Interglacial to Lower Weichselian loess/palaeosol sequences – case studies from the Lower Rhine Embayment, Germany. Spatial
Located in the Lower Rhine area two loess/palaeosol sections were investigated focusing on the last Interglacial to Lower Weichselian pedosedimentary sequence. The sections are situated in the brown coal opencast mining area of Inden and Garzweiler, and comprise archaeological find layers from the Middle Palaeolithic. Selected ratios derived from multi-element analysis are presented for the first time for the prominent loess accumulation area north of the Rhenish Shield. In addition luminescence ages were...
