Archaeology across the Pleistocene-Holocene boundary in western Germany: Human responses to rapid environmental change

In recent years, new insights into the Mesolithic in the Rhineland and in Westphalia have been gained. The Early Mesolithic human remains of the Blätterhöhle in Hagen should especially be mentioned as they even attracted international attention. Additionally, a first stratigraphic sequence containing hearth remains and lithic assemblages of the Early to Late Mesolithic age has been excavated there. Further new sites and radiometric investigations on single finds suggest varying influences from...

Foragers and Farmers during the Neolithic Transition in Western Central Europe: Searching for Evidence of Mobility and Intercultural Networks

Introduction This paper discusses the interaction between foragers and farmers during the various phases of the neolithisation processes in south-western and north-western central europe. The disparate state of research on Late Mesolithic hunter-gatherer groups and early Neolithic farmers in terms of the certainty of the detailed chronology, the number of sites and the comprehensiveness of the find and feature analyses, does not permit a discussion on the basis of equally-weighted data....

The Late Palaeolithic and Early Mesolithic in (north)eastern Germany - article

The late Palaeolithic and early Mesolithic in (north) eastern Germany provides good insights into cultural aspects of hunter-gatherer-communities due to the amount and density of key-sites. Representing different geographical zones like coast, lowlands, or middle range mountains, the areas inhabited by Late Pleistocene and Early Holocene hunter-gatherers show a distinct variety within their ecological constraints. Likewise other regions in Europe, these shifted in the area under investigation as a...

Mesolithic pits in Germany – an initial overview

Inspired by the conference „Creuser au Mésolithique / Digging in the Mesolithic“ in Châlon-en-Champagne in March 2016, the authors start a compilation of Mesolithc pits in Germany. Although it is still incomplete, some statements can be already made. Nearly 80% of the pits known until now come from settlement contexts. The majority was found in sandy soils or flood loams. Although features are known from the Early and the Final Mesolithic, the pits stem mainly from the Middle and the Late Mesolithic. The...

Out of Africa, the Nile Valley and the Northern Route Spatial

Hypotheses on the dispersal patterns of modern humans out of Africa have undergone much change in the past decade, with new ideas on the routes and geographic extent of movements proposed. New data and perspectives from the Nile Valley necessitate reassessment of the role of the Northern Route. Here, fossil evidence and technological strategies followed in the Nile Valley between 200 000 to 300 000 years ago, and its relevance to dispersal patterns are discussed. Most of the sites in the Nile Valley relate...
