Human manipulation of terrestrial gastropods in Neolithic culture groups of NE Morocco. doi Spatial

Shells of terrestrial gastropods (Helicidae, Sphincterochilidae) are common in rock shelter sediments and open-air sites of Iberomaurusian to Neolithic age in NE Morocco. Excavations at numerous sites in the eastern Rif yielded new sites with a rich record of well-preserved terrestrial gastropods, among which species of the genera Otala, Sphincterochila and Alabastrina dominate. In sites with sediments younger than 7500 calBP, such as Taghit Haddouch, Hassi Ouenzga, Ifri Oudadane, Ifri Armas and Mtlili, a...

The Early Neolithic pottery of Ifri Oudadane, NE Morocco. Qualitative and Quantitative evidences. doi Spatial

This paper presents the Early and Late Neolithic pottery of Ifri Oudadane, a littoral shelter in Northeast Morocco containing both Epipalaeolithic as well as Neolithic deposits. The transition is indicated by the appearance of domesticated plant and animal species, pottery and diverse changes in lithic technology. A domesticated lentil dated to 7.6 ka cal BP may mark the onset of this transitional process. With the help of 22 14C-ages the Early Neolithic deposit can be subdivided in three phases (ENA, ENB,...

Climate variability over the last 92 ka in SW Balkans from analysis of sediments from Lake Prespa Spatial

The transboundary Lake Prespa (Albania/former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia/Greece) has been recognized as a conservation priority wetland. The high biodiversity encountered in the catchment at present points to the refugial character of this mountainous region in the southwestern Balkans. A lake sediment core retrieved from a coring location in the northern part of the lake was investigated through sedimentological, geochemical, and palynological analyses. Based on tephrochronology, radiocarbon and...

Computer Model of Forager Mobility

This is an agent based model (ABM) of forager mobility. This model is based on assumptions from Optimal Foraging Theory (OFT) and written in NetLogo. See the attached ODD Protocol for details.

Mehrskalige geomorphometrische Analyse des Gebel Duwi, Ägyptische Ostwüste (diploma thesis University of Cologne) Spatial

This geography diploma thesis was written by Harriet Berkhan within the framework of the CRC 806 “Our Way to Europe: Culture-Environment Interaction and Human Mobility in the Late Quaternary” at the University of Cologne. The thesis looks into the working hypothesis, as to whether the current morphology can yield important evidence for the discussion about the “Out of Africa” dispersal of anatomically modern humans (AMH) and the reconstruction of the palaeoenvironment. Inasmuch as there are no large-scale...

Climate and environmental change in the Balkans over the last 17 ka recorded in sediments from Lake Prespa (Albania/F.Y.R. of Macedonia/Greece) Spatial

This paper presents sedimentological, geochemical, and biological data from Lake Prespa (Albania/Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia/Greece). The 320 cm core sequence (Co1215) covers the last 17 ka calBP and reveals significant change in climate and environmental conditions on a local and regional scale. The sediment record suggests typical stadial conditions from 17.1 to 15.7 ka calBP, documented through low lake productivity, well-mixed conditions, and cold-resistant steppe catchment vegetation. Warming...

Vegetation and climate history of the Lake Prespa region since the Lateglacial doi Spatial

Pollen assemblages of a sediment sequence (Co1215) from Lake Prespa reveal substantial vegetational and environmental changes on a regional scale for the Lateglacial and Holocene. The age-depth model, based on radiocarbon dating and tephrochronology, indicates continuous sedimentation for the last c. 17 000 cal BP. An open landscape with prominent cold-resistant steppe vegetation and isolated tree patches (mainly Pinus) is inferred for the Lateglacial. The pollen data suggest the survival of numerous...
