Abstract

The Stalać loess-palaeosol sequence (LPS) is located in the interior of the Central Balkan region, south of the typical loess distribution, in a zone of palaeoclimatic shifts between continental and Mediterranean climate regimes. Due to the scarcity of other LPS in this area, it is of interest for palaeoenvironmental studies and as such the geochronology is of uppermost importance. Six fine grain (4-11µm) samples of the section were investigated.

Preheat plateau and dose recovery tests for one quartz sample (SAR protocol, Murray and Wintle, 2000, 2003) revealed a strong preheat dependency, visible as falling De-plateaus. This might indicate a possible thermal transfer of charge between different traps during the quartz measurements (cf., Roberts, 2006). Moreover, the examination of the luminescence signal discovered a weak fast component and a changing contribution of the different signal components. This highlights the unsuitability of dating quartz in this LPS.

Further measurements were conducted on the polymineral fine grain fraction with the pIR50IR290 protocol (e.g., Thiel et al., 2011). Prior IR stimulation temperature tests, dose recovery tests and residual measurements show satisfactory behaviour. Equivalent doses range from ~150 to ~650Gy, dating the last two glacial cycles. This includes two tephra layers, three soils corresponding to MIS3 and MIS5 and a small pedogenic layer corresponding to MIS6. This chronology correlates with the Chinese loess plateau, suggesting a strong connection between western and eastern Eurasian climatic evolutions.
