Hunter-Gatherers of the High-Altitude Afromontane Forest - Holocene Occupation of Mount Dendi, Ethiopia

The Dendi Lake Rock Shelter is situated circa 80 km west of Addis Abeba on the West Central Ethiopian Plateau in the Ginchi woreda of the Oromiya regional state of Ethiopia. In October 2012 a team from the University of Cologne, CRC 806 directed by R. Vogelsang excavated a test-trench that revealed four archaeological horizons that could clearly be distinguished in typological manners as well as by radiocarbon dates. The talk will focus on the lithics, mainly the microliths that are supposed to be one of the main characteristics of the Later Stone Age. Their wide variability is a unique feature of this assemblage used by hunter-gatherers of the high-altitude afromontane forest during the late Holocene.
Le refuge Dendi Lake Rock Shelter est situé à environ 80 km à l'ouest d'Addis Abeba, sur le plateau éthiopien du centre-ouest, dans le Ginchi woreda de l'État régional d'Oromiya, en Éthiopie. En octobre 2012, une équipe de l'Université de Cologne, CRC 806 dirigée par R. Vogelsang, a creusé une tranchée d'essai qui a révélé quatre horizons archéologiques clairement distingués par les modes typologiques ainsi que par les datations au radiocarbone. La discussion portera sur les lithiques, principalement les microlithes qui sont censés être l'une des principales caractéristiques de LSA. Leur grande variabilité est une caractéristique unique de cet assemblage utilisé par les chasseurs-cueilleurs de la forêt afromontagnarde de haute altitude de l'Holocène tardif.
