New project PaleoMaps - a paleoenvironmental GIS data collection
30.6.2016
To provide paleoenvironmental GIS data for the CRC 806, a new idea was developed and implemented within the Z2 project.
Because of increasing demands from the project for GIS based data representing certain paleoenvironments, like for example the Last Glacial Maximum of Europe, we developed an approach to collect and provide this kind of data to the CRC 806 members, as well as to the wider research community and to the interested public.
For collecting and managing the heterogeneous data sources for the production of paleoenvironment GIS datasets, the CRC806-Knowledgebase was developed. The CRC806-KB is a Semantic Mediawiki based collaborative database, which allows to collaboratively collect, edit and query data sources from literature and other published, as well as internal sources.
Open Science has an important role in the design and implementation of this project. The principles of Open Data, Open Source and Open Access are implemented where possible.
Additionally the PaleoMaps datasets are published with an according DOI, that allows for properly scholarly citation of the datasets, if used in further scientific works and publications.
The PaleoMaps datasets can be found in the CRC806-Database data catalog.
