Condicionantes del Medio Físico en el Poblamiento Paleolítico entre los ríos Eresma y Riaza (Segovia).

Abstract

The physical environment and its relationship to the human population has been a constant in the historic and prehistoric studies. To study these interactions in an objective and scientifi c way, this work is a methodological proposal beginning by the breakdown of the physical environment in their elemental factors (slope, anfractuosity, slope aspect, lithology...); for each variable, a map of the studied territory is generated. Later, these maps of each variable are integrated through map algebra using a geographic information system (GIS) and multi-criteria evaluation (MCE). Thus, one
can generate maps of synthesis of elements of the physical environment as determinants of the settlement or transit zones presence of human communities; or dynamic factors of the physical environment as conditions of preservation of the remains of settlements and trails. The crossing of the two synthesis maps you can get a map of the potential for the existence of archaeo-sites by physical constraints that, overlapped with the archaeological cards, produces interesting interpretations or the need to correct
MCE, increasing the weights or introducing new factors of the physical environment biotic (fl ora and fauna) or anthropogenic. The fi rst steps of the implementation of the proposed methodology to the territory of Eresma-Riaza watersheds, in the south-central Duero Basin (Segovia district) and for the Paleolithic period, are taking out interesting
conclusions about relationships space-time of archaeo-sites and will apply to the management of this heritage (exploration, conservation, prevention before projects ...).
